we went for a friend's birthday dinner. her and her bf love the place. they talk about it all the time. i have heard mixed reviews about the place. going online and checking out menu didn't look too appealing to me. regular food with a high price and over stuffed with "expensive" words for simple ingredients i had a glass of the Chardonnay from usa. excellent should have order 1.2 liter. i shared the sicilian mussel except made not spicy (don't like spicy food). the broth has aromatic and delightful. nice tomatoes, olives and onion broth. mussels were plump and tasty. the table bread was amazing. i usually steer away from bread because it is dry and garbage. but this was warm, soft and fluffy in the middle with a slight chew and crispy on outside. i ordered the shrimp and scallop carciofi (fettucine) made without cream and with tomato instead. the pasta was cooked perfectly, scallops a bit fishy, shrimps were poached perfectly. a bit too much tomato but im a bigger fan of cooked pasta perfect el dente. people sitting around me ordered veggie gnocchi (she loved it), short rib gnocchi (he wolfed it down and wanted more), prosciutto fuselli (she said pasta was amazing too slow portion and prosciutto tasted like bacon, pork chop dinner (thought it was amazing), smoked chicken el la vodka (he said was ok). food was good better than i expected. a bit over priced but it was a friend's birthday. I had the olive dish to start, this dish is simple but very well done, I enjoy some olives with a nice cold pint and a piece of bread to go with it, the oil lightly flavored with fresh herbs, although a better quality oil would have been nice it was still well done. After that i decided to try the fish and chips since it is VERY hard to find good fish and chips I thought if they understand how olives can be enjoyed they might do a good fish a chip, and I was right, homemade chips and a perfectly cooked fish. Another delicious meal at Umberto's last night, with great service, a quiet table, and an unpretentious atmosphere. A side note, but important, they hit just the right note with the background music. Smooth jazz at just enough volume to enjoy. It was fairly quiet for a Thursday night, but the other half dozen or so tables were also filled with diners expressing their appreciation for a good meal. Beef carpaccio was, like all the dishes, the perfect size portion. My husband and I shared it well as the bruschetta, which was a little too cheesy for me but perfect for him. The chef salad is a great mix of greens and veg with a nice vinaigrette. The ostrich and kangaroo - what can I say - grilled/sauteed just beautifully and mouthwateringly delicious. The Shiraz reduction was a very nice accompaniment to the kangaroo. Both entrees were served with roasted veg and potatoes, nicely seasoned, as well as a charming little fresh vegetable relish/slaw on radicchio. Shared a bottle of 2009 Rosemount Cab Shiraz, chosen from the small but interesting wine list, proved a good choice. We lingered over tiramisu and flourless chocolate hazelnut cake, preferring the tiramisu. The "Umberto" specialty coffee was a lovely finish to the meal. Ingredients were fresh, attention was paid to presentation, and the service was very attentive yet not intrusive. We will definitely be back. (I will try the seafood pasta next time - 3 of the table of 6 near us ordered it as their favorite) Read more
