For Maria and Lidia Drummond, beautiful, fresh flowers were always part of their daily lives. “For a lot of people, flowers are synonymous with special occasions. But in our childhood home, there was always a bouquet somewhere, it was an everyday thing,” explains Maria. Together, the sisters now run Caprice Floral, just north of the Marche Central in Montreal, Quebec.
That natural relationship with flowers was most likely the seed of their entrepreneurial spirit. “We opened Caprice Floral in 1990,” Maria says. “Before that, we both worked in other fields: administration for Lidia and design for me. But our passion was, and remains, flowers.”
It was after they launched their business that the sisters realized there should be a demand for fresh flowers — the same way that picking up a baguette or a bottle of wine is part of some people's walk home from work. “Far from being restricted to special occasions, flowers really add character to a home,” she says. “People love having a beautiful bouquet on the table.”
