Much & Little’s owner Sarah Savoy will enthusiastically endorse the woven knit wrap and the wool jumpsuit you’re trying on. It’s not a savvy sales ploy: she loved the piece enough that she owns it herself. Much & Little, a curated lifestyle store, is an extension of Sarah, her aesthetic, her creativity, and love for beautiful things.
Sarah’s young son was about to head into school full-time, around 2011, when she decided that she needed a change in her life. She wondered what her next move would be and after fruitless searching, she said to herself, “I’m going to have to create it.” A retail neophyte, Sarah channelled her interior design background into plans for a gift shop with a strong element of nostalgia.
Over several months she planned furiously and researched products that would complement the space, looking for objects that were handmade, made of natural materials, unusual but practical. Says Sarah, “I love well-made objects, things that are useful.” She scoured catalogues for quality, vintage-inspired blankets, linens, jewellery and gifts. She favoured items from family-owned businesses or artists with a rich story.
With a location in Mount Pleasant secured, she opened Much & Little in 2011. Sarah designed the space and handpicked each item. At first, she staffed the store alone, six days a week and knew the inventory by heart. “Everything was so neat!” she remembers.
