It’s winter in Vancouver – water is filling your shoes and the wind is ruining your umbrella and your hair – and you’re seriously considering hibernating until March. But we are social creatures who thrive in the company of other people. Your friends need you! And, music is one of the best ways to connect. Festivals

Contact Winter Music Festival
EDM fans will be heading to B.C. Place on Boxing Day for the annual Contact Winter Music Festival. This year’s lineup includes Marshmello, Armin van Buuren and more.

Concerts

Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton
A decade after her last solo release, Haines (of Metric fame) is back touring her new record Choir of Mind. Her intelligent lyrics and haunting vocals are dark and uplifting at the same time. One dollar from every ticket will go to Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights.

  • Where: Chan Centre for the Performing Arts

The Pack A.D.
Dollhouse, the latest record from local rockers Becky Black and Maya Miller, should be enough to draw you out from under your covers. If you’ve ever seen them live, you know you’ll get your money’s worth. Opening bands are Gang Signs and Dopey’s Robe.

  • Where: Rickshaw Theatre

Jay Z
The 4:44 album is coming to Vancouver as part of Jay Z’s North American tour. As one the biggest stars in hip hop, this is sure to be quite the show. The concert is technically sold out, but there are still lots of verified resale tickets available. If we’re lucky, his wife will make a guest appearance.

Keithmas VIII – A Foodbank Fundrager
Join a great party for a great cause by celebrating the birth of Keith Richards at the Rickshaw. The Pointed Sticks, Rich Hope and other local favourites will perform. All proceeds will go to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

Wolf Parade
Ring in the new year by checking out Wolf Parade’s latest recording gift to the world, Cry Cry Cry, at The Commodore Ballroom. Be sure to look cool by bobbing your head to the tunes.

K Flay
If you’re addicted to K Flay’s Every Where is Some Where album, but didn’t get the chance to catch her with Imagine Dragons this summer, jump at the opportunity to see her in a more intimate setting at The Commodore Ballroom on January 21st.

Katy Perry
Katy Perry is a performer well known for putting on high energy, entertaining shows. She’s a pop superstar who is sure to bring a smile to the Grinchiest of concertgoers.

Lorde
Lorde is bringing her Melodrama world tour to Vancouver on March 8th. At 21 years old, the New Zealander is already making major marks on the music industry – and gaining significant fandom – since releasing her first album Pure Heroine in 2013.
