Make Seders fun with these 4 kid-friendly ideas

November 26, 2014

Children are an integral part of the Seder, but it's hard to keep them engaged and entertained throughout. We'll give you 4 creative strategies to help your young ones enjoy the Passover Seder.

Make Seders fun with these 4 kid-friendly ideas

1. Act out the plagues

The Ten Plagues is one of the most exciting and intriguing parts of the Passover story, and it comes right before the meal. This is a good opportunity to get your kids active and involved.

  • Have your child act out or visually represent each plague with a "Plague Bag." You can purchase pre-made Plague Bags online or make them yourself.
  • Include things like plastic toy frogs, Styrofoam peanuts that can be tossed for hail, and bright red stickers for boils. Not only will your kids have fun, but they'll pay attention to the subject matter too.

2. Stock the table with snacks

The Seder is long, and even adults get hungry before the meal. Consider putting some snacks on the table that relate to the Seder. For example, in addition to the parsley that you'll dip and eat, include carrots and celery sticks with ranch dressing or apple slices with honey and peanut butter for a delicious and varied selection.

3. Make a colouring Hagaddah

  • There are many downloadable versions of the Haggadah online that can be printed on regular paper at home.
  • Rather than buying published, physical Haggadah books, print out your Haggadahs and leave crayons on the table. Encourage children to colour in the Haggadah, making pictures of things they learn along the way.

4. Pass out picture books

  • If there will be lots of kids at the Seder, consider investing in some picture books about Passover. You can scatter them throughout the table during the meal.
  • Encourage kids to look through the books if they get bored. That way, even if they're distracted, at least they'll be distracted with the appropriate subject matter.

Getting your kids involved in the Passover Seder activities allows them to learn about their heritage while they have fun. Including snacks on the table, picture books, and colouring options will help them become more engaged with this important event.
