Beyond pancakes: make your maple go further

November 3, 2015

Maple syrup just doesn't get enough credit: yes, it's delicious with pancakes and waffles, but there are so many other dishes that pair wonderfully with this sweet nectar! Here are a few new ways you can use maple syrup in your meals and snacks.

Beyond pancakes: make your maple go further

Breakfast

  • We all know maple syrup is a staple on the breakfast table when it comes to pancakes and waffles, but what about everyday food like oatmeal?
  • A little drizzle of maple syrup on hot oats adds a lovely shot of natural sweetness. You could also try sweetening your smoothies with a dash — maple flavour pairs especially well with banana drinks.

Snacks

  • The next time you're in the kitchen baking up a tasty loaf or a tray of muffins for afternoon snacks, considering subbing some (or all) of the sugar in your recipe for maple syrup.
  • You'll get loads more flavour.
  • Or, try sweetening a tub of plain or Greek yogurt with some syrup. For a new twist on an old favourite, try pouring maple syrup, instead of cream cheese icing, over a tray of cinnamon buns while they're still hot.
  • Or, if you like snacking on nuts, try roasting them yourself to inject them with all-out maple flavour: simply scatter some raw nuts on a lined oven tray, then drizzle some maple syrup over them and ensure everything is coated.
  • Add a sprinkle of salt and some cinnamon, and roast them in the oven for around 10 minutes, turning halfway through.

Savoury dishes

  • Maple syrup and bacon go well together, so why not take that further and introduce maple into your roast dinners?
  • Try marinating pork chops or pork tenderloin in a combination of maple syrup, mustard, sesame oil, garlic, and a touch of salt and pepper.
  • Beef lovers will enjoy maple-glazed ribs, or you could add a dash of maple to your next batch of BBQ sauce.
  • Even veggies can pack a punch with a little helping hand from maple syrup: try roasting vegetables like pumpkin, beets, and sweet potato with a drizzle of maple syrup on top.

Cocktail hour

  • Maple and bourbon or rum are a perfect match when it comes to sweet and satisfying cocktails.
  • If you're really adventurous and like to dabble in home brew, try a maple pear cider.

You see, maple is meant for so much more than pancakes and waffles! Try one of these ideas and you'll see how versatile this syrup is.
