Which types of meals can you cook in a slow cooker? A hot, bubbling stew or juicy pot roast are probably the first dishes that come to mind. Today's version of this very handy appliance can also handle a few surprise dishes. Since most people don't know their crockpot is so versatile, it's time to take another look at the modern slow cooker and discover the following five surprising foods it can make.

5 surprising foods you can cook in a crockpot

1. Fresh bread

  • You might think that cooking bread over several hours would result in a soggy, doughy mess.
  • The truth is, it's all about technique.
  • Place a metal cooling rack in the bottom of your crockpot, and set the temperature to high.
  • While your crockpot is pre-heating, mix your quick bread as usual, and pour it into your prepared baking tin.
  • Place the tin on top of the cooling rack in your slow cooker.
  • Finally, drape a few pieces of paper towel or thick dish cloths over the top of your crockpot to catch condensation.
  • Place the lid on top, and make sure it fits properly.
  • Cook on high for two to three hours or until it is done.

2. Baked potatoes

  • Wash the potatoes, and prick them several times with a fork.
  • Wrap each potato in foil, and place in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  • Do not add water.
  • Cook on high for two to three hours, or eight hours on low.

3. No-fuss rice

  • Pre-treat the inside of your crock pot dish with your favourite cooking spray.
  • Add 250 mL of rice, with a pinch of salt, butter or any other spices, and add in 370 mL of water.
  • Cook the rice on a high setting for one hour, or until done.
  • Fluff with a fork, and serve.

4. Breakfast

  • From fluffy egg casseroles to hearty oatmeal, you can make a breakfast that's ready before you've had that first cup of coffee.
  • Pre-grease your cooker with cooking spray, and preheat on low. Combine 1/2 pound of your favourite cooked breakfast meat, shredded red potatoes and grated cheddar cheese in one bowl.
  • Next, beat together six eggs, 1/2 cup of milk, salt and pepper and pour into your slow cooker.
  • Add the remaining ingredients, and cook on low for four to six hours.

5. Fondue

  • This is a great way to work all day and still have time to prepare a tasty chocolate fudge sauce for your family or guests.
  • They can dip fruit, cake and other goodies into the fondue for an easy, mouth-watering treat.
  • Simply combine two cups of your choice of sweetened chocolate morsels and one standard tin of condensed milk, and cook on high for one to two hours.
  • There are many more recipes that have slow cooker potential, so dust off your crock pot, and get cooking.
