3 simply delicious smoothie recipes

1. Blueberry-banana smoothie

Smoothies are generally a mix of puréed fresh fruit and ice cubes. This one uses frozen fruit instead of ice cubes to avoid diluting the flavour of the smoothie. Apple juice stands in for the liquid content of the ice cubes and boosts the fruit flavour.

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Serves: 1

Ingredients

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 175 g (3/4 c.) frozen blueberries
  • 300 ml (1 1/4 c.) apple juice
  • 10 ml (2 tsp.) honey
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Directions

Simply purée the banana, blueberries, apple juice, honey, cinnamon and salt in a blender or small food processor until smooth. Then serve in a tall glass and enjoy!

2. Mango-surprise smoothie

Smoothies have become a great way to get extra fruits into our diets. This one uses avocado which, aside from the great nutritional benefits, lends it a rich and creamy feel in your mouth.

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Serves: 1

Ingredients

  • 250 g (1 c.) chopped ripe mango
  • 1/4 Haas avocado, peeled, pitted and chopped
  • 125 ml (1/2 c.) mango sorbet
  • 50 ml (1/4 c.) skim milk
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp.) honey
  • 10 ml (2 tsp.) lime juice
  • 50 ml (1/4 c.) crushed ice
  • 2 mango slices, 1 cm (1/2 in.) thick
  • 1 lime slice

Directions

  1. Combine the chopped mango, avocado, sorbet, milk, honey, lime juice and ice in a blender.
  2. Blend on high until smooth. Pour into a tall glass.
  3. Slit the sliced mango and the sliced lime halfway through to the centres. Attach them to the rim of the glass before serving.

3. Strawberry-yogurt smoothies

When summer arrives and strawberries are in season, this is the perfect way to enjoy them. Whirl up the berries with yogurt for a creamy, refreshing snack. Orange juice adds a sweet tang.

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 kg (4 c.) ripe strawberries
  • 250 ml (1 c.) plain yogurt
  • 125 ml (1/2 c.) fresh orange juice
  • 15 g (1 tbsp.) sugar
  • 4 thin orange slices (optional)

Directions

  1. Hull all but four of the strawberries. Add the hulled strawberries to a food processor or blender. Add the yogurt, orange juice and sugar.
  2. Process on the highest speed until a well-blended purée forms, about 15 seconds, stopping to scrape down the sides of the container once or twice.
  3. Taste the mixture and sweeten with more sugar, if you wish. Pour into tall glasses.
  4. Slit the four whole strawberries and the orange slices halfway through to the centres.
  5. Attach one strawberry and one orange slice, if using, to the rim of each glass before serving.

For an ultra-smooth beverage, strain the mixture by using a wooden spoon to push the drink through a mesh strainer. Discard the strawberry seeds.
