Hunter. Provider. Authority figure. With credentials like that back in simpler times, it was no problem finding anything for your father. But times have changed and a tie just won't cut it this year. This charity event is a thoughtful option to involve your father in, especially as men have their own share of medical issues as they grow older. All proceeds from this Rundle Park event goes towards research in the hopes of finding a cure for prostate cancer. Other benefits, however are more immediate, such as getting outside to take in the fresh air and getting some exercise.
While we’re on the subject of exercise, here’s another worthwhile event that also affects the kids. Taking place at Whitemud Park just off Fox Drive, this physical event provides a chance for participants to do their share to cut down on youth homelessness. Recipients of these proceeds include iHuman and YESS.
Sadly, there aren’t any major events scheduled this Father's Day for any sports buff fathers, but here’s the next best thing – a pair of season tickets to all the Esks home games this year. It’s a chance for dad to see what kind of momentum the Green and Gold can garner this year, after they nearly made it to the league final last season. And maybe if you’re good, he might take you to a couple games at Commonwealth Stadium.
If your old man is the kind of person to tinker under the hood, here’s an automotive pilgrimage just for him. This 19th annual car show at Celebration Church bills itself as the largest free Father’s Day event in the city with four-wheelers of every variety and a free barbecue to boot.
If pop likes his tunes rustic and a bit rough around the edges, head a few clicks south of the city to catch the last day of this festival at Four Seasons Park. Despite the event title, you’ll find a pretty eclectic lineup on day three, such as Celtic singer Deanna Dolstra, hard-rocking Punch Drunk Cabaret and headliner Matt Andersen. Take advantage of food vendors and a beer tent to cool off between hot acts.
There's something to be said about celebrating Canada's 150 years of unity with a demolition derby that involves things coming apart before your very eyes. But if you want to escape that irony, the trek to Vegreville – located nearly an hour east of Edmonton – is probably worth satisfying dad’s curiosity. This Vegreville Agricultural Society event features some smash ’em up fun, as well as a car show and shine. For those who like to keep things on track, catch the model railroad exhibition.
You may feel as though there's not much to laugh at in the headlines, and dad probably feels the same way – so consider this option at the Citadel to be therapeutic and hilarious as heck. Improvaganza has been a festival fixture for Rapid Fire Theatre for years, having helped previous participants like Josh Dean, Ron Pederson and Nathan Fillion get a toehold in Hollywood.

Though dad’s macho attitude may have faded over the years, flowers and brunch still isn't gonna cut it. Book an upscale restaurant for some classy AAA Alberta beef entrees at some of the city’s finest establishments. Give him a chance to dig into a hearty plate at spots like Lux, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, The Keg, Chop Steakhouse and Vons.
