Burnaby's diverse markets and grocery stores

If the choice of grocery stores in a neighbourhood is a reflection of the local community, Burnaby is one multicultural place. You’ll find every ingredient you need for your recipes — whatever their ethnic origin — just a hop, skip and a jump away.

Han Nam Supermarket

106-4501 North Rd, Burnaby, BC V3N 4R7

If you’re planning a dinner party with an Asian twist, then you’ll want to head straight to this Korean-focused grocery store. Hannam’s stocks staple ingredients for exotic dishes, including a variety of pork products, fresh greens and rices plus pantry essentials like red bean sauce and different types of noodles. While the store itself has Korean roots, they sell groceries for an array of Asian cuisines and aim to share the delights with multi-cultural Burnaby.

Save-On-Foods

They’ve spread all over the city since their first store opened in 1955 but they’ve managed to keep a mom and pop vibe. This grocery store keeps it simple rather than overwhelming customers with so much choice that you can’t see the forest for the trees. You’ll find bakery, seafood, meat and deli counters here, as well as a range of organic products. Market Place IGA is also a good place to pick up flowers and the bistro will keep hunger pangs at bay.

New Generation Foods

Step through these doors and you’re on a trip around the world, no passport required. New Generation has its own line of grains, beans, lentils, rice, spices, dried fruit and nuts, catering to cuisines on just about every continent. It’s an excellent place if you have dietary restrictions, as they sell a range of flours including corn and sorghum. Their selection of canned and jarred goods is eclectic and they have a huge choice of frozen vegetables, too.

There's just about every Italian brand under the sun at this family-owned store, with staff available for tips on how to use the various ingredients. Whatever item you’re looking for, you’ll find a huge selection among which you’ll discover a new favourite. There are mountains of delectable cheeses, oodles of noodles, including gluten-free options, breads that would make even a celiac's mouth water and a meat market with top-quality prime cuts and cured varieties.

Persia Food Products Inc

6791 Kingsway, Burnaby, BC V5E 1E4

This place is perfect if you like to have a choice, not only of produce and dried goods, but also of tomatoes, rice and peppers. A great grocer for a fresh and diverse selection of produce, Persia Foods also has a good bulk foods section where you can stock up on, to name one, quality loose leaf teas. To top it all off, the prices are surprisingly low for what you get.
