In 2014, Justin Heuff and his business partner Karla Osorio (photo) were in Los Angeles when they noticed the popular food trend was sushi burritos, a sushi rolled up in the shape of a burrito. They loved the idea but weren’t sure if Montreal would take to it. Fast forward a year and a half later and sushi burritos were popping up in New York and Toronto. “We thought if the trend exists in Toronto, it’s only a matter of time before it comes to Montreal, and we want to be the first [to open one],” says Justin.
In the fall of 2016, the two opened Moushi. “We knew that the California trend was hitting Montreal hard,” recalls Justin. “The whole idea of that summertime vibe, the style, the clothing, everything about California was in Montreal. We saw the same transition with food.” Moushi added another hot food trend from Hawaii called poke bowls, sushi served over a bowl of rice. Customers now have the choice of roll or bowl: roll it in a burrito or put it in a poke bowl.
They teamed up with Chef Wayne Wong who was running Sushi Moushi on Décarie Boulevard. “The name Moushi is an ode to him,” says Justin.
