After eight years of working in banking, Dave Crum was ready for a change. “I always wanted to have my own business,” he explains. “I come from a family of entrepreneurs and I was always thinking about how I could branch out.”
It was during this “soul-searching phase” in 2013 that Dave began home brewing. When he wasn’t considering what direction his career was going to take, he was thinking about beer — a lot. He spent his spare time reading about brewing, making trips to supply stores in Brampton and north of Toronto, and experimenting with new recipes.
It soon became clear to Dave that he should funnel his natural entrepreneurialism into something beer-related. And while he considered opening a brewery, the start-up capital he would need was daunting. So instead, he decided to share his love of homemade beer by opening Noble Hop, a small home brew supply store.
“I love going to the stores, looking at the products and trying the new gadgets all the time,” he says. “I thought I could do something that's small-scale and fun and really brings some value to downtown. There really wasn’t anything like it in the core.”
