Mersch is destined to play for a Kings affiliate this season. Despite that, he is focused on the big club, noting that young players have been able to crack the Kings lineup in recent years, most recently, Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli. Since Wilson's diagnosis, similar to his plight to see improvements made to playing conditions in the 1980's, Wilson has been determined to help find a cure for ALS. The National Hockey League announced several rule changes, with many also applied in the American Hockey League this season.
