best mexican food ever

it looks a bit run down but the amazing food and friendly service make up for that, the service is a bit slow because i think they are too popular then they are prepaired for, the staff are extremely kind and friendly, i went here for my birthday and they spoiled me with free tequila shots and deserts, the nachos are the best you will ever have, i have been here several times and have never had a bad meal, this is real authentic mexican which is 1000 times better then the imitation mexican most restaurants have, the prices are very fair

Best Mexican I've had in Canada

This is the best Mexican food place we've found in southern Ontario - heck, in Canada. Granted, Canada isn't exactly known for its Mexican food, but we are starting to develop an appreciation for authentic flavours introduced to us from Latin American countries. We no longer have to rely on Taco Bell or Mexicalli Rosa's for a taste of "Mexican" food! The flavours here remind me of some of the places I've enjoyed in southern Mexico and southern California. But Mex-I-Can is something truly outstanding. It doesn't look like much from either the outside or inside (although it *is* styled like restaurants you'd find in Central America), but sit yourself down on one of those metal chairs at a table with a grass umbrella and prepare to eat those first impressions, my friend. Order the guacamole - it comes freshly crushed in an oinkajete bowl with chips made from the fresh tortillas produced in their on-site tortillaria. What's that special flavour in there you can't quite pin down? Pickled cactus! I'm partial to the carnitas tacos myself. I could eat them all day. But the papusas are quite delicious as well, and the burritos aren't just huge - they're full of awesome! Spiced to order, we find that even the "hot" isn't too hot to handle. The flavour still shines through. And you can always order another margarita. Don't expect quick service if the place is packed. Just be patient and accept that it's packed for a reason. This used to be Hamilton's best kept secret - but not anymore. Word is out, and we haven't had the place to ourselves in ages. Say "hi" to Angel for us - and grab a package of tortillas from the on-site store on your way out the door. You'll be craving those flavours again by noon the next day.

We've been here a few times now and we love the food. Will be returning for sure. Staff, very very friendly. It's just been a positive experience every time.

Ok I had my doubts but this was absolutely amazing!!! The service was extremely slow so I wouldn't recommend going on a weekend or during meal times but it was worth the wait. The best quesadilla i've ever had.

I had heard much about this place from friends, and online reviews. Most of the reviews were right in that it is rather 'divey'. The first thing that stood out to me was a picture Che on the wall. I find it amusing that the modern culture has made this mass murderer into a hero, and didn't find it appropriate for a restaurant to have a picture of this sadist there. That being said, I found the service a bit on the slow side. It took well over five minutes for someone to bring menus, and another 5 or so minutes before the drinks were brought, after we had ordered them. The food though, was brought in a timely manner, and was good. It was well presented and tasted great. The prices were also reasonable. After the meal, we had to go back into the kitchen to ask for our bill, as both the servers walked by us multiple times without even approaching us (or looking our way) to ask if we were done, though we clearly were. I am not sure if I will be back, or recommend it to anyone else. Service was weak, food was good, mass murderer on the wall. You decide.
