The purpose of karate isn’t solely to learn how to throw a punch or execute a roundhouse kick, but to learn the skills necessary to maintain a calm state of mind and diffuse situations before they escalate. Matt Bickel, owner of West Van Karate Academy, understands this concept deeply and works hard to instil it in all of his students. “We specialize in giving kids confidence and helping them focus,” says Matt, “and we develop good manners and proper respect as well, while having a really, really fun time.” It’s a balanced, level-headed approach that Matt really believes in, and something he’s seen pay off time and time again.
While Matt's primary demographic is children aged 5-10, he has room for everyone at his karate academy and tailors his teaching to fit each age range. “When the kids get a little bit older, we focus on giving them the skills to defend themselves in real-life situations,” he explains, “how to deal with bullies and diffuse any conflict that may come up.” Life is a series of challenges, with a person’s character revealed by the decisions they make, and Matt wants to make sure each of his students reacts as wisely as possible.
