The bad news is there’s only one Nepalese restaurant in Calgary. The good news is that it’s outstanding. The Himalayan is a reincarnation of Mount Everest Kitchen, which closed its doors in 2008. Two years after that, owner and chef, Sanjay Rajbhandari and his wife Soniya opened a new location under a new name and once again began serving their authentic home-cooked Nepalese dishes.
You know your way around wontons, jiaozi, gyoza and samosas, but have you ever tried a momo? Momo are dumplings commonly found in Nepal, Tibet and parts of India that are often shaped quite similarly to Chinese xiaolongbao, though there are also crescent-shaped momo. At Himalayan, you can choose between chicken, pork or vegetarian momo. The use of various herbs and spices makes these dumplings unique from their East Asian counterparts, as does the spiced tomato sauce used for dipping.
You may not be familiar with home-style Nepali cuisine, but you ought to be. At Himalayan, Sanjay and Soniya Rajbhandari serve hearty noodle plates, dumplings and spiced meat dishes. These dishes were born in the Himalayan Mountains and are lightly influenced by the food of China and India. Notably, half the restaurant’s mains are vegetarian dishes.
Tucked away in a Killarney strip mall on 17 Ave SW, Himalayan has such a huge following that a reservation is a must if you are planning to dine in. Nepalese cuisine is inspired by its Chinese and Indian neighbours, so expect to find meaty dumplings (momo) and fried noodles next to saucy curries and dal on the menu. Himalayan has many vegetarian options available, including several dishes prepared with cottage cheese as a protein source.
