Ship & Anchor Pub welcomes you to their dining room. They are open after-hours all week and are easily reachable by bicycle but also by public transit. They are positioned in a neighborhood packed with restaurants, coffee shops, stores and parks. You may pay by American Express, MasterCard and Visa.
The Ship and Anchor Pub, or The Ship, as it is affectionately know to its regulars, features all of the trappings of a traditional British pub. Books line the walls, the back bar is decorated with colourful soccer scarves, the telly is tuned to soccer matches and the bar is frequented by many British expats. The pub also celebrates the British New Year and St. George's Day, serves hearty pub food and features an impressive draft beer selection. But ask any regular what makes The Ship so beloved and they will likely tell you it is because of its inclusive, anything-goes atmosphere.
Marketing and promotions manager Nicola Trolez attributes the pub's success to its mixed-bag clientele. "People feel comfortable here,” she says. “You can come straight from work, or you can come ready for a night out. Everybody's welcome. It's special that people can come in and feel like they belong." Many an unlikely friendship has been formed over pints at a shared table on the pub’s outdoor patio where office workers mingle with musicians and students. The pub’s reputation has even earned it celebrity visits by folks such as Cuba Gooding Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal.
One of the most popular meals offered at this well-loved 17th Avenue Southwest pub is a massive serving of cod battered in Grasshopper Ale batter and served with tartar sauce, fennel coleslaw and fries. This gut-busting dish is arguably the most filling option on the entire Ship & Anchor menu.
One of the Beltline’s most heralded pubs, The Ship and Anchor not only offers a little hair of the dog, but also a hearty brunch menu on weekends and holidays. The breakfast poutine is a satisfying belly-buster, or you can go lighter and get an order of eggs Florentine to complement a mid-morning pint with pals.
This busy, well-worn UK-style pub is a mainstay watering hole on the 17th Avenue Southwest strip. This is in part due to its substantial sidewalk patio, which features picnic table seating. Its pub grub menu is solid (dishes include butter chicken, bangers and mash and the bestselling Ship Burger), and the bar is festooned with Alberta craft brew taps as well as requisite UK beers. If you’re lucky, a band may be rocking out on the pub’s tucked-away stage.
