Nothing brightens up a home during the holidays quite like a lovely flower arrangement. These are the flower choices to make for some major calendar events.
There are no hard and fast rules as to what flowers are right for every occasion (except roses on Valentine’s Day— that’s a no-brainer), but here are a few tips on which flowers work best for each major calendar event.
1. New Year’s Eve
It’s the start of a new year. The future is fresh and crisp, so why not launch the next 12 months with a bouquet of white flowers?
- White carnations: These flowers represent remembrance. Perfect for remembering the mistakes you made last year.
- White daisies:These pretty little fellows represent innocence. They are the promise of not screwing up another year.
- Baby’s breath:Usually reserved for weddings bouquets, baby’s breath represents festivity. Is there a more festive day of the year than New Year’s?
2. Easter
Whether you're celebrating Easter as a religious or a secular day, you are probably taking time off and enjoying family and friends.
- Lilies: White lilies are considered the classic symbol of Easter and represents love and hope, which is also perfect for students who love the week off and hope it will never end.
- Daffodils: These are another very popular Easter flower. Daffodils represent chivalry, respect and love. Not a bad message at any time of year, really.
3. Mother’s Day
You should be familiar with this one. Your first choice should always be your mother’s favourite flower and colour, but if you’re stuck here are some suggestions.
- Carnations: These flowers represent gratitude, remembrance, and cheer. According to Christian legend, carnations grew from the ground where the Virgin Mary shed tears over Jesus’ death. So they should also do the trick for you.
- Chrysanthemums: This flower has the word “mum” in it. It’s perfect. The chrysanthemum also represents excitement, truth, sharing and secret admiration. And whose mom wouldn’t love one of those?
4. Canada Day
This is an easy one.
- Tulips:Red and white. Use a Molson beer bottle as a vase. Done and done.
5. Christmas
This is it. The holiday you’ve been waiting for all year. It's time to bring out big flower guns.
- Poinsettia: A classic Christmas flower. The red and green goes perfectly with the holidays but can kill the cat, so be careful where you display them.
- White roses: In a clear vase with some fresh cut pine and a few cranberries tossed into the water? Are you kidding me? Santa will put you on the “niiiiiice” list.
- White hydrangea:These fluffy beauties fill out any flower arrangement. Add some long red and white candy canes to the bouquet for that true Christmas spirit.
