Montreal's best on-the-go sandwiches

When John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, invented the eponymous food item in the 18th century, little did he know he was transforming the concept of lunch forever! Here are some of our favorite spots (and food trucks) to grab a quick but delicious sandwich when time is of the essence.

Restaurant Momesso

1
5562, ch Upper-Lachine, Montréal, QC H4A 2A7

The ultimate dude place, Momesso is a sports-themed family-run submarine shop that’s been going since 1978. Order your sub with sausage, chicken, steak or pepperoni and match that up with a pint or pitcher of beer; nothing wrong with that!

Restaurant Satay

2
3721 Rue Notre-Dame O, Montréal, QC H4C 1P8

What used to be Saint-Henri’s best-kept secret is now a favourite of locals and beyond. Drop by the Atwater Market stand in summer or the permanent fixture year round for a delicious Southeast Asian experience. As for sammiches, a favourite of ours is the Oriental beef sandwich.

Le Cheese Truck

3
5976 Monkland, Montreal, QC H4A 1G8

A food truck specializing in anything cheese related, Le Cheese has also recently expanded into a bricks and mortar locale in NDG’s Monkland Village. Be sure to check out their Philly cheese steak sandwich for a good dose of cheese.

Boulangerie Capanelli

4
4634 Rue Notre-Dame O, Montréal, QC H4C 1S4

This popular Italian sandwich and coffee slinger is part of the movement that spearheaded Saint-Henri’s rejuvenation in recent years. Stop by for fantastic sammiches made with the finest cold cuts and ingredients.

Café Pavé

5
243, rue Notre-Dame O, Montréal, QC H2Y 1T4

A daytime-only sandwiches “and more” joint in Old Montreal, this popular lunch spot also serves salads and killer pizzas. The focus here is on sourcing and quality ingredients; try the Buenos Aires steak sandwich or the Buffalo chicken sandwich for a good lunch fix.

La Foumagerie

6
4906, rue Sherbrooke O, Westmount, QC H3Z 1H3

A longstanding gourmet boutique specializing in cheeses that also makes great sandwiches and salads; perfect for a quick but healthy and delicious lunch. Notable sandwiches include the British – with roast beef – and Swiss.

Le Gargantua Pantagruel

7
2151 rue Fleury E, Montréal, QC H2B 1J9

If you can’t get enough of the grilled cheese revival movement, look no further than this food truck specializing in all forms of the comfort food staple. Patrons will be delighted to find their favourite sandwich stuffed with anything from bacon and asparagus to brisket and chili.

Joe's Panini

8
1404, rue Drummond, Montréal, QC H3G 1V9

A 24-hour panini stand that’s been fixing up McGill students and others for decades, Joe’s is mostly known for its signature spicy grilled chicken sandwich, although the menu also includes various Italian deli cuts as well as a couple of out-of-place items such as gyros and burgers.

Every passing year confirms the death of fine dining as we once knew it.  Small, affordable, made-to-share plates have cut across all cuisines and eased their way into the upper echelon of Montreal’s newcomers for 2017.  Fall may be creeping in on us soon, but there’s still plenty of time to try one of our suggestions below – the places that caught our attention, for better or for worse. It comes as no surprise that Montreal’s local food movement is a force to be reckoned with. As a result, scores of chefs have jumped on the bandwagon; some do it out of an ideological drive, others to satisfy an increasingly demanding and scrutinizing clientele. Montreal’s rich and complex dining scene goes through its fair share of fads and trends every couple years. Of late, we’ve witnessed an explosion in Japanese izakayas, which were followed by Neapolitan pizzerias and more recently taquerias. The following list showcases our city’s various takes on the Mexican staple, from its most traditional form to experimental renditions that are bound to amaze. [Image credit: iStock]
