I have been to the whistle stop many times, however my experience today has definitely ensured that I will not be returning. The service that I received was terrible, however the service given to an accessibility customer was disgusting. The customer, who utilized a wheelchair was refused a smaller container to take his leftovers because the waiter could not see the 'logic' behind it. I was served the wrong order & then overcharged. After leaving money the waiter yelled after us to pay.
Really good poutine! I recommend the pulled pork
I love the whistle stop and I've went several times, however, as of late I had only one problem. That problem is that late at night (specifically tonight) I was given a so-so Poutine that lacks in comparison to those served by the staff during the day. While mostly, my poutine has very crisp fries, tonnes of gravy, and cheese melting underneath - this one did not. I am mainly going to place that fault on whoever was there, I usually tip but not tonight. I know its not the regular way the food is, but I wish that there were more people at night to make sure the food is made properly and up to the everyday standards they have. So, all in all, GREAT Poutine but not at night - won't be going there at all unless its during the day!
Ive gone to Whistlestop quite a few times, but most of the time me and a couple of friends just go to the Poutine bar. Its one of our favourite parts of the restaurant, but if it were just a little better than I'm sure it would be the best food in downtown Peterborough. The problem with their poutine is that they don't use hand-cut fries and also use processed cheese. Although it's pretty bad for you and is overpriced (although you do get a lot) it's really delicious. Their sandwhiches, chips, and hotdogs are good as well, but not very high quality. It's fine, and you'll get some good stuff with some of the cheaper dishes, but it needs improvement to be good, and if they did improve I wouldn't mind paying a little more. The atmosphere is not the main attraction here. It's a very ordinary room. There is some Native art on the walls but it isn't very attractive and the lounge in the corner looks like it was scrapped together with furniture people donated because they were broken in some way. I like going to Whistlestop, and I will keep going there, but ultimately improving on their atmosphere and the quality of their food just a little bit would drastically improve their score. Go there, just don't expect way too much from them.
We went because we heard of the poutine bar. The poutine wasn't anything exciting. The fries weren't cooked properly, they weren't homemade, the gravy was probably canned and the cheese didn't seem like real curds (shredded cheese....) The prices were surprising, a little high for a poutine. And when you look around they've got old furniture, ripped couches and dust everywhere above the prep area behind the counter...not overly attractive. The other thing that struck me as weird were the sizes, only 2 options, small and HUGE, nothing in the middle. I think this place has huge potential to be much better, just needs a good clean and some better cooking methods.
Does the world really need a poutine menu with 51 choices? Nope, didn't think so, especially when the gravy on my regular poutine (fries, curds and gravy) tasted like fake dill. The fries hadn't been cooked long enough to hold up under all of the gravy and were soggy. I like my poutine fries to still have a bit of crunch, and these did not. The gravy reminded me of the dill flavoured popcorn seasoning, and overwhelmed the whole dish. I was pleasantly surprised by the freshness of the cheese curds. The table we sat at had clearly not been wiped, and we had to ask the server to remove the greasy splotches. As well, the restroom needed a bit of attention (We were in on a Saturday afternoon that was not very busy) so this made me wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen.
-Greasy, undercooked, underdrained generic french fries. I don't think the oil was clean or hot enough. -The chicken fingers were cooked, but nothing special. -I was getting a take-out order, asked for ketchup and it was not provided. It did seem like a cool place to hang out with friend and talk, but if you are hungry there are other places on George St (also open late) where they know how to cook fries,
Best place in town to get some late night grub the foods pretty good, large portions for reasonable prices staff were friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant
amazing whistle dog, a foot long! very filling. Fries were perfectly cooked, good change compared to most places around here.
Best sausage I have ate in a long time :) definitly will be back. I love the welcoming atmosphere.
Everything was hot and perfect... I am a total bacon lover and it was delish!! I will be back as often as I can!
