Imagine travelling around the world on an adventure of a lifetime, immersing yourself in the history and tradition of your most passionate craft, learning from the masters and then making your own mark in the world. Sound too good to be true? Well, in the world of craft beer, Matt Tweedy did just that.
Matt and his wife Dayna worked for years as experts in Toronto's craft beer world and dreamed of opening their own brew pub. Thanks to Matt's training, he knew he needed to do one more thing first: “I decided to go on trips to England, the U.S. and Belgium to work at some of the world’s most famous breweries for a week each and see if I wanted to take my hobby farther.”
Matt travelled and learned from the world’s best brewers, from Avery brewery in Colorado to Cantillon, one of the world’s oldest and most renowned breweries in Belgium. When he returned, he and Dayna decided to go for it – they moved to Ottawa and opened Tooth & Nail Brewing Company in September 2015.
In their first year, they came charging out of the gates with four Canadian and three Ontario brewing awards, and were rated number three in the Ontario craft beer guide’s top three breweries in Ontario. “We rapidly became a local beer institution,” says Matt, proving that his trip was more than worth it.
