I don't know about the other mediocre reviews but I've probably been eating here for more than twenty years (once upon a time, it was known as Fuliwah) and, aside from the odd time where the food has been a bit cold (i.e. dim sum on Sundays is a zoo !), I've always left satisfied.
The dining room is huge, by far the largest in Chinatown. The food is spotty at best (Have had to return food more than once because it tasted spoiled or cooked improperly). The service is prompt, especially if you are a recognized regular. The atmosphere is lacking, although when it's full (on dim sum weekends) it does have a warm buzz. They should do something about the ground floor lobby, which is uninviting and has a foul odor. The prices are decent, surprising for a restaurant this size. There's a half size (Chinese tapas) menu for dinner and a fixed special that are very reasonable (Applause - they recently hired a new chef and updated their menu offerings). But, overall, this once grand institution looks tired and could use an extreme makeover from top to bottom.
I've been to this restaurant many times. I usually go wiht a big group of friends for dim sum or night snack. I love going there as the foods cheap and you get a great variety. EVeryone is full for about $11 tax and tip in. The variety and food quality is pretty good although the service is mediocre. For a restaurant that is busy i thought the service was good but for a restaurant that is not fully booked the service is just adequate. You can't ask too much I would say, it's not as if my tea pot is ever empty or my table is not filled with food within 30minutes. i'm happy to wait 30minutes as it is a restaurant and not a fast food restaurant. I've heard others say racist comments about this restaurant which is startling as for a group of chinese staff they are quite friendly to my group of caucasian friends and the one chinese me. WOuld i go again? definitely!
I came in with a girlfriend and it was quite good. We ordered off of a 'snack' menu that I heard of and it was quite cheap about 4 - 6 dollars a plate that you share. It came quite quickly too. I will have to try the dimsum sometime.
I have been going to this place for years for dim sum, but lately the food has taken a turn for the worst. The last couple of times I was really dissapointed with the quality of the food, I mean everything I ate was just bad, seafood isn't fresh, chewy, the meat are completely tasteless. Since then I have found MUCH better places, I won't make any publicity for them here, but just check out reviews for other chinese restaurants. Now that I have found good quality dim sum, I will never go back to Chu Sing.
If you like bugs in your food this is the place to go. My girlfriend and I were good regular customers of this restaurant. We shall not be returning. We were served a dish with two large steamed bugs in it. We asked to see the manager who told us it was dark in the kitchen and the chef did not see them. She acted as if it was perfectly normal and offered us ten percent off the bill. I will never eat there again!
We used to go to Chu Shing fairly regularly as they have tasty general tao chicken and other dishes. However one evening we ordered and the bak choy came out first as usual and after a few bites into it we found what looked like a caterpillar cooked in with the bak choy. We spoke with the restaurant manager and their only response was that it happens sometimes because bugs get into the vegetables. They did not seem to care in the least and took the dish back and brought out a new one. Needless to say, I wasn't interested in eating at that ponit.
Unfortunately I have no clue exactly what I ate at this restaurant...I was fortunate to be in the company of a Chinese friend who ordered for the party. The food was terrific though. The dishes just kept coming; and what a variety! Everyone in our party felt it was delicious and that the price was very good. I think we all agreed that this is a restaurant we would visit again. We were all surprised when the bill came and it was under $80 for 6 of us! WOW. No one went home hungry!
well.....what cam i say ..the food there was excellent..my kids loved the food..so did me husband..the service was excellent..at the end we ended up giving 20$ tips...i will defintiy go back..EXCELLENT!!!!
-good tasting chinese food -good selection of chinese food (for ottawa) -poor service -good pricing
One of two good Chinesse restaraunts in Ottawa. This restaraunt has grown quickly because of good food and agressive pricing. Dim Sum is low in MSG and fairly diverse, weekends can be busy so go early. Home grown food is well prepared but cleanliness and courtesy is typical of china town. Late night menu is very good after 9, in short top notch student cuisine.
I do not recommend this restaurant. It is overly crowded and busy. Wait staff bark dim sum names at you. Almost nothing was suitable for vegetarians witht ehexception of the friend noodles. One dumpling was said to be vegetarian and when bitten was opened up to reveal shrimp. The 'is this only vegetables'? question was asked twice and confirmed all meat and seafood free. A vegetable dish had to be ordered from the menu, the chinese broccoli. 3 or 4 bites into the dish reveals a large cooked cockroach. Only that dish was deleted from the menu. They still delivered other dishes to the table even thought it was obvious that we had lost our appetites. Not impressed.
