We love this place! Very friendly and casual with great food. The papusas and plantain are the best with lots of kimchi-like cabbage - definitely worth a try especially for the frugal.
I have been going to La Cabana for many years and it is a great place. But one must go there without "North-American" expectations. It is owned an operated by people from El Salvador and is very authentic. The service is slow but friendly, the food is plain but real. It is very much like what you would get in El Salvador. Very good pususas, and just plain 'home-cooking.' Enjoy it for its authenticity and one of the only places to get pupusas in town.
We got there and we were asked about drinks and I got the guava juice. The only thing is the wait for the food because it seemed to take a while for the meal to get prepared. Once I tasted it though I could tell that they took the time to make it right. In the meanwhile my gf and I watched their large plasma on the wall with some funky spanish tv shows! This is the only place in Ottawa with that type of culture/feeling inside the restaurant but I still wish the preparation time was shortened just a bit.
Yes, the service is slow, but I think it is because they actually prepare the food right there. This is not you usual "mexican" restaurant you find in this town: if you want a tortilla with some sort of meat slopped into it, then this is not the place for you! This food is completely different, and you will not find anything like it in Ottawa. So if you are feeling like a relaxed , econimical, good home-made meal from a different culture, then try this place. We both loved it!
The truth is it all started with bad and very slow service that forgets that you are there at all. Then the food overall was terrible/horrible. Ive been to a lot of places, big, small or in the middle of nowhere and honestly I have never found a worse place than La Cabana. They just dont care what they are doing and especially care less about their customers.
Nice place if your looking for an alternative to standard Tex/Mex... Family run and casual...you kinda feel like your not in Canada anymore...it's fun. The food overall is very good homelstyle cooking.
The food is excellent!! but the service is very slow, even if there are no other patrons in the restaurant. Good place to go for lunch or early dinner during the week. I've heard that it's very busy on the weekends.
The very first time I tried this restaurant,i loved it. The food was great and the service was excellent. I was a very loyal costumer, as well as my family. However;im not sure if they changed chefs or if they just got lazy, but the last time I visit them, the Horchata was NACIDO,the pupusas were not cooked properly, and the "stuffing" was PUDRIDO. Perhaps it was a bad day to go, or perhas they had not relized, but in th end, does it matter??? They should have been more careful in dealing with the food. Fo people who do enjor the reataurant, i appluad you--no rotten food for you.
